Nicely told. The 4th generation of the Mirassou family, my grandfather's, lent Bob the first $100,000 to build the Robert Mondavi Winery back in '66. Michael would spend vacations from his San Jose Catholic high school at my grandparent's house instead of heading back to Napa. Being family friends and being the foremost voice in the marketing of CA wine, Bob was the consultant for the 5th generation of the family just starting the Mirassou brand nationally in 1966.

I think the most important thing Bob did for wine in America was to give this very young wine-drinking culture permission to taste and fall in love with wine as an essential part of a well-lived life. The European model highlighted patience, time with food, time with family, and a sense of equanimity and conviviality (qualities often in short supply in America), all of which were made manifest by the circumscribing influence of wine.

The small circle of experience can seem awful foreshortened sometimes, and one wouldn't think he could get lost walking that circle. Perhaps another Robert Mondavi comes along to help us remember the lessons that helped build this amazing industry.

My father was a contemporary and friend of Robert Mondavi, but I never heard this whole story. Thank you.
